Imaging Cameras

Astrophotography cameras are designed to capture the faint light of the night sky through a telescope. Dedicated astronomy cameras use sensitive sensors and, in many models, active cooling to reduce noise during long exposures, making them ideal for imaging nebulae, galaxies and star clusters. Planetary cameras use high frame rates to capture thousands of short frames of the Moon and planets, which are then stacked to reveal remarkable detail.

Choosing the right camera depends on your targets, telescope and experience level. Many astrophotographers start with a DSLR or mirrorless camera attached via a T-ring and adapter, then move to a dedicated astronomy camera as their skills grow. Explore Scientific also offers the field flatteners, focal reducers, camera adapters and astrophotography mounts needed to build a complete imaging system that captures sharp, detailed images of the night sky.

When selecting an astronomy camera, consider sensor size, pixel size and whether you want color or monochrome imaging. Color cameras are simpler to use, while monochrome cameras paired with narrowband filters offer maximum detail and flexibility. Match the camera to your telescope's focal length and a stable, tracking equatorial mount for best results. Astrophotography is a rewarding pursuit that lets you capture details invisible to the eye, and the right camera and accessories make it accessible to beginners and advanced imagers alike.
