Find the Right Refractor Telescope for Your Observing Goals

Refractor telescopes are prized for their sharp image quality, reliable performance, and user-friendly design. From beginner-friendly models to advanced apochromatic refractors for astrophotography, these telescopes offer a versatile way to explore the Moon, planets, star clusters, and more. Browse the answers below to learn how refractor telescopes work, what makes them unique, and how to choose the right model for your astronomy goals.

Refracting Telescopes: How to Choose

A refracting telescope, or refractor, uses a lens at the front of the tube to bend (refract) light to a sharp focus. Because the tube is sealed and the optics are fixed in place, refractors need no collimation, cool down quickly and deliver crisp, high-contrast views of the Moon, planets and double stars. Explore Scientific refractors range from 70mm first telescopes to air-spaced ED APO triplets up to 152mm.

Which Refractor Do I Need?

Achromatic vs apochromatic refractors

An achromatic refractor (two lens elements) is affordable and excellent for the Moon, planets and bright deep-sky objects, with a little color fringing on very bright targets. An apochromatic (APO) refractor uses extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, usually in three elements, to bring all colors to the same focus. The result is pin-sharp stars with no purple halo, which is why APOs are the first choice for astrophotography.

Refracting vs reflecting telescopes: which is better?

Refractors win on sharpness, contrast, durability and low maintenance, and they are ready to use as soon as you set them up. Reflector telescopes use mirrors instead of lenses, so they give more aperture for the money; a Dobsonian is the cheapest way to get a big mirror for faint galaxies. Many observers choose a refractor for planets, travel and imaging, and a reflector for deep-sky light grasp.

Refractor Telescope FAQ

What size refractor should I get?

A 70mm to 80mm refractor is a great first telescope and a perfect grab-and-go scope. A 102mm refractor shows noticeably more detail on planets and double stars while staying easy to mount. 127mm and larger refractors gather enough light for fainter galaxies and nebulae and need a sturdier mount.

Is a refractor good for astrophotography?

Yes. Short, fast ED APO refractors such as an 80mm or 102mm triplet are the most popular astrophotography telescopes because they are lightweight, need no collimation and give flat, color-free images with a field flattener. See our astrophotography telescopes.

What is another name for a refracting telescope?

A refracting telescope is usually called a refractor. Depending on the lens design you will also see achromat (two-element), APO or apochromat (color-corrected, often a triplet) and doublet or triplet, which describe how many lens elements are in the objective.

Who invented the refracting telescope?

The first refracting telescope is credited to Dutch spectacle maker Hans Lipperhey, who applied for a patent in 1608. Galileo Galilei built his own improved refractors in 1609 and used one to discover Jupiter's four largest moons in 1610. You can build a modern version of his telescope with our Galileoscope STEM kit.

Do refractors need maintenance?

Very little. The lenses are fixed in place, so there is no collimation like a reflector needs. Keep the dust cap on, use a dew shield, and clean the objective only when needed.

What warranty do your refractors have?

Explore Scientific telescopes carry a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner (electronics are covered for 2 years). Explore One and National Geographic telescopes carry a 1-year limited warranty. Register within 60 days of purchase to activate coverage.
