International Dark Sky (IDA) was founded in 1988 by David Crawford a professional astronomer and Tim Hunter a physician/amateur astronomer. The mission of the IDA is "to preserve and protect the night time environment and our heritage of dark skies through quality outdoor lighting." The IDA became the first organization to be involved in the dark-sky movement and now has become the largest organization involved. They have continued to make significant strides in leading the movement to protect night from light pollution. And their impact has reached 51 countries through its members, advocates, and dark sky places that are located all over the globe.

Featured Activities
International Dark Sky Week was created by Jennifer Barlow in 2003. It focuses on problems associated with light pollution and promotes the solutions to mitigate it. It is a key component of Global Astronomy Month and has grow to become a worldwide event.
