Dobsonians

A Dobsonian telescope pairs a large-aperture Newtonian reflector with a simplified alt-azimuth mount that is easy to assemble and very portable. Sized to bring in lots of light, these telescopes are ideal workhorses for deep-sky enthusiasts and great instruments for getting highly detailed views of our planetary neighbors.

Dobsonian Telescopes: Maximum Aperture for Your Money

A Dobsonian telescope pairs a large-aperture Newtonian reflector with a simple, sturdy alt-azimuth base that lets you point the telescope by hand with smooth up-down and left-right motions. Because the design puts nearly all of the cost into the optics rather than a complex mount, Dobsonians offer the most aperture for the money of any telescope type, making them a favorite for deep-sky observing.

Explore Scientific Dobsonian telescopes range from portable 6-inch tabletop Dobsonians and classic 8-inch and 10-inch Dobsonian reflectors to large truss-tube Dobsonians that break down for transport. An 8-inch Dobsonian telescope is often recommended as the ideal all-around telescope, gathering enough light to show spiral galaxies, planetary nebulae, globular clusters and rich detail on the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. Larger 10-inch, 12-inch and 16-inch Dobsonians reveal even fainter objects and finer detail for experienced observers.

Dobsonians are quick to set up, intuitive to use and require no polar alignment, making them excellent for beginners and seasoned observers alike. Pair your Dobsonian with wide-field eyepieces such as our 68° or 82° Series to keep objects in view longer, a quality finder scope for star hopping, and a collimator to keep the mirrors aligned. With proper care, a Dobsonian telescope provides decades of bright, breathtaking views of the night sky.
