Explore Scientific Expert Tips

Your Complete Guide to Choosing the Right Telescope

Whether you’re shopping for your first beginner telescope or upgrading to a high-performance instrument for serious astronomy, this collection from Explore Scientific includes a wide range of refractor telescopes, reflector telescopes, Dobsonian telescopes, and Newtonian reflector models designed for every level of observer. From compact travel-friendly scopes to large aperture telescopes built for deep-sky observing, understanding factors like aperture size, optical design, and mount type (alt-azimuth, equatorial, or GoTo) can make all the difference in your stargazing experience.

Here, our team breaks down key telescope features, including how aperture impacts light-gathering power, the differences between refractors and reflectors, mount options for smooth tracking, and essential accessories that enhance planetary and deep-sky viewing. Use this guide to confidently choose the best telescope for viewing planets, galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, and more.

All Explore Scientific Telescopes

Explore Scientific offers an extensive selection of telescopes designed for visual astronomy, astrophotography, and stargazing. From refractor and reflector telescopes to precision ED apochromatic refractors, doublet and triplet refractors, and Dobsonian reflectors, our collection is built to meet the needs of beginners, hobbyists, and advanced astronomers alike. Whether you are looking for a compact Explore FirstLight beginner telescope, a powerful Dobsonian truss-tube reflector, or a high-performance carbon-fiber FCD‑100 or FCD‑1 ED APO triplet for astrophotography, you will find exceptional optics, precision engineering, and durability in every model. Explore Scientific telescopes provide crisp planetary views, stunning deep-sky observations, and reliable performance for tracking and imaging celestial objects. Backed by the Explore STAR warranty and years of optical innovation, these telescopes deliver clarity, consistency, and long-lasting quality, helping stargazers of all levels explore the universe with confidence.

Telescope FAQ

What is the best telescope for beginners?

For most beginners, a 70mm to 80mm refractor or a 4.5-inch to 6-inch reflector is the sweet spot: easy to set up, bright enough for the Moon, planets and bright star clusters, and light enough to carry outside. If you want the most light for the money, a tabletop or 8-inch Dobsonian is hard to beat. See our beginner telescopes.

What size telescope do I need to see planets?

A quality 70mm refractor shows Saturn's rings, Jupiter's cloud bands and its four largest moons, and the phases of Venus. A 100mm to 127mm refractor or a 6-inch to 8-inch reflector shows more detail, such as the Cassini Division in Saturn's rings and the Great Red Spot on Jupiter on steady nights.

Should I buy a refractor or a reflector?

Refractors use lenses, need almost no maintenance and give sharp, high-contrast views, which makes them great for the Moon, planets and astrophotography. Reflectors use mirrors, so they give you more aperture for the price, which matters most for faint galaxies and nebulae. Compare refractor telescopes and reflector telescopes.

Do I need a GoTo telescope?

No. A manual alt-azimuth or Dobsonian mount is simple and fun for learning the sky. A GoTo or tracking mount finds objects for you and keeps them centered, which helps in light-polluted skies and is needed for long-exposure astrophotography. Our Sidara Series offers both.

What warranty do your telescopes have?

Explore Scientific telescopes carry a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner (electronics are covered for 2 years). Explore One and National Geographic telescopes carry a 1-year limited warranty. Register within 60 days of purchase to activate coverage.

How does shipping and returns work?

Orders over $69.99 ship free within the US, and you have 30 days to return a telescope if it isn't the right fit.
